to shy to ask

I would like to come along to one of your rides with a view to joining. But am put off as i feel embarrased approaching people/groups,and wouldn,t know how to grade my riding to other people.Im sure that there are other people just as shy.

  • Re:- to shy to ask
Hi Andy, Honestly, no need to be shy OR embarrased. There are 125 members in the Club and that covers everyone from complete novices to the best in Scotland. We cycle in groups of all abilities and take our time at each feature, stopping and practising til we sometimes get it right. There is always someone happy to pass on some informal advice on technique. Club night is normally Thursday so you're more than welcome to meet with us at the Learnie car park. Or if you really don't feel that confident, drop a note here or at himba@hotmail.co.uk and we can arrange to take you out individually. Don't hold back tho or you're missing out on a fantastic sport. Cheers, SteveB

Learnir red

Just a quick note to find out which ba****** s have ruined the red route i was really disappointed when riding last week its a bit too user friendly now......

  • Re:- Learnir red
Hi Diesel, no replys yet. I wasn't involved with the decision or the work (thats my get out!) but I understand that there have a few (mostly unreported) injuries on the fun park. The thinking was that if you can't do doubles and hit the second hump, you break a collar bone/wrist and if you CAN do doubles, it surely doesn't matter what's between the 1st and 2nd hump cos you're clearing it anyway. You can probably tell that I'm not a jumper, but we're always glad to hear views of members and non-members alike. Would be good to hear what you think would make it better.

Thought exactly the same when i saw.Its graded as a red but after the changes its nothing more than a blue.I am no jumper, quite the opposite but the old jumps were far better.

Riding in Skye

Hi there, does anyone know anyone who'll be riding in Skye next week? I'm going to be there with g/f and baby and a ride would be great, but I don't fancy heading out on my own. Is there a local MTB club? Thanks a lot

      Lost Klein Attitude

Just a quick email to ask if you can keep your eyes peeled for a stolen '1994 Klein Attitude'. We were burgled last week and it was taken from my garage, in Worthing, West Sussex, although it could now be anywhere!

As you can imagine, it was my pride and joy and I'm totally devastated that it's been taken.......I was gonna be buried with this bike, I reckon!! :-(

Therefore, there is a substantial reward for any info. leading to its return.

        cycle hire

We are visiting Plockton for a week on 6th May 2006. We are looking to hire two cycles, one full size gents and one suitable for a nine year old. We have been told that the cycle hire shop in Plockton has closed, anyone give us any pointer of where we can hire from locally to Plockton?

        Lost: Oakleys at Learnie

I lost a pair of blue Oakley Half-jackets last week in Learnie car park. If anyone has found them (I checked on Monday and found one of the broken lenses but no frame so someone has found them) can you please reply here or hand them in to Steve at Square Wheels.

Good day on Saturday at Learnie despite rotten weather in morning. I tackled the new Black which is as fantastic as it is scarey! I took over a hundred photos (mostly at the jumps) which can be seen at http://www.garywilliamson.co.uk/Red_Rock_Opening/index.html If anyone wants a large version of any of the images use the feedback form on the web page. Learnie

27/2/06 - Went to try out the Learnie trails to day - mainly to rec it out so that I can ride with my 9 year old son.

Really impressed how you can link the trails - I went blue 1,2,3, black, red , green in the morning but I could easily have done any combination.

The black run seems a wee bit more tricky than Wolftrax red but at least is not as impossible as the Wolftrax black run (for me anyway). I liked the wooden decking at the end.

The link section between blue 3/black and top of red is very muddy and wet - normal I know but are there plans to improve this track?

I liked the very fast red run - the berms are just spot on - they push you tight against the track and fire you out at speed - bit dicy on the fast double jumps.

really nice to finish with a green run - a few small airs along there.

Any plans for some facilities like Wolftrax? - Cafe, Bike wash, showers?

              Kenny, Nairn

The afternoon was the same again but without the black loop.

I will be back with my son once officially opened

              • Re:- Learnie
I had a thrash around Learnie recently too and agree with Kenny.
At the top of Blue three, at the view point with the bench it is reasonably easy to cut across onto the black run. The problem is working out in which direction the black run goes. Its fair enough just now when its not too busy, but I think it would be a good idea to put some direction arrows to stop idiots like me going the wrong way.

                Tour de Highlands

Hi there! I'm a 25 yrs old italian guy, who loves cycling. I was in Scotland (Glasgow) last year for a long while and I fell in love with the Highlinds. At that time, I went by car across the island of Skye and some other beautifull places. Now I want to go by bike off-road around the Highlands (in a kind of circle way if possible). Have you got any idea or suggestions on web-sites, crazy people who did the same, or anything might be useful for my purpose?? I'll probably come there between spring and summer time.
Thanks a lot and enjoy your cycling.

Learnie's a good place to start - not too many surprises on the new tracks but you get a much heightened sense of speed. A 10 watt light with an hour and a halfs burn time would be a good start - but be warned - its addictive and there's no end to what you can pay for lights.

I think the WMBW trails should be kept if possible, its good to see something a bit different and it would be a shame to lose trails like this.

Keep up the good work with the trail building.

                        Motorbikes at Learnie

There has been reports of motorbikes using the new trails at Learnie. THis is an illegalact so please do contact the Police with any details. I have spoken to the Fortrose Police about this and they will keep an eye on the area.

                          Hi
I am looking for a good cycling photo in the Ross and Cromarty area. Prefer good scenic shot as it will be used in a printed publication promoting new access legislation. Can pay small fee for use and name will be credited.

Hi. Forgive what may sound like ignorant questions, but where's the best mountain biking in Scotland? I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA and am planning a biking vacation out there next summer. I've seen a lot about the Seven Stanes and Wolftrax, but I was hoping to find trails up near Oban and Inverness. Any suggestions?

Hi Donovan, Thanks for visiting the web site.
Thats a big question - the best trails in Scotland? I'm bound to be biased and say our own ones here at Learnie and Contin, both about 20miles north of Inverness. Learnie is still under construction but should be finished later this year - I should have some new pictures on the web site then. Contin is much more natural single track with some very challenging rocky out crops. I guess the real question is what kind of riding do you like? The Seven Stanes are great purpose built tracks as is Wolftrax at Laggan. But there's also a whole wilderness in the Cairngorms south of Inverness if you like open free riding. And of course, Fort William just had the DH, 4X and XC World Cup last week - you can gondola up and then blast 2.5km down one of the best DH's in the world.
Best thing to do is keep checking the web sites, pick up some of our phone numbers and give us a bell when you get over. How's the cycling with you? Good trails? Keep in touch and all the best. SteveB

                            Trails Open?

Hi, I'm originally from Tain but now live in Glasgow. On the rare occasion I'm up I usually pop into Learnie for a blast. The black has to be one of my favourite trails. I was up a few weeks ago and it was superb. I came up this weekend though and noticed that it was all fenced off and there was quite definitely some work being done on it. I didn't ride it but did ride the blue jumpy thing. I am planning comming back up at the end of september but don't want to ride anything that I'm not supposed to. Can you please tell me what is likely to be open and available for riding?

Hi Doug, see the reply below. Things are well on the way to being finished - but as you can imagine, there is a lot yet to be done. Much of this is by a contractor, but there is also a fair bit of work put in by the club members. As such, its difficult to give a definite opening date, but if you're in the area, check the web site and give one of the contacts a ring - there's sure to be some good riding. Thanks for your comments and hope to see you some time. Cheers, SteveB

Hi Gmark, Thanks for the offer - any interest is always greatly appreciated. There's only one draw back - because this is a formal project with earth moving and tree felling equipment on site, Forestry Commission can only accept help from HiMBA Club members (this is an insurance issue). I'm not touting for business - but why not join the club anyway? (Or, maybe you have??) Again, thanks for the offer of help.

Hi Doug I am delighted that you like the current Black trail. There are many of us who feel the same way about it . Sadly it is under threat because it will need work to protect it and improve some of the northshorey bits. There is sadly some discussion about abandoning it as ride. A small group of us are determined to keep it even if it means a breakaway group. If you like it as much as you say, let your feelings be known to the HiMBA committee.

Coming from Cambridge where bike theft is rife, I can say that the best beterrent is to have your bike security marked by an organisation like Theafbeaters. This typically includes etching & engraving but also the fitting of a transponder within the frame that makes identification easy. If it can be proved the the bike is stolen it makes it much harder for thieves to pass on the goods and hence they will go elsewhere.

Heading up for Hogmanay from Stirling this year for a week (Wed 29th Dec - Wed 5th Jan). Any suggestions of places to ride/routes? Figured a trip down to the World Cup courses is probably necessary (although not the doonhill!), maybe get over to Laggan if we are lucky and there isn't too much snow! Any natural routes, or anything in the forests around Fort Augustus itself would be great though!

The woods behind Fort Augustus have a few fun trails in them, and a wee bit of North Shore stylee stuff that was very entertaining, and somewhat submerged!

Managed out 3 times over the week - we were on for every day up until the Corrieyairick Pass... I took a tumble coming down there in a white out, and managed to knacker up my right wrist, leg, arm and shoulder all in one fell swoop (on the 2nd). Haven't ridden since :-(

Look forward to comeing back up sometime when the weather is better and the days longer to try the Laggan and Fort William trails, as well as sorting some unfinished business on a couple of the more ambitious routes we tried but ran out of time/light on!

There are a few riders in Caithness, mainly based around Thurso. Email me direct, check the caithnesscc.co.uk website for local routes, join mtb_caithness yahoo group for general chit-chat and whats going on now! Hi

I am from Aberdeen, heading north this weekend to stay in Evanton. Has anyone got a suggestion for a decent circular route within an hour's drive. Would prefer 10 - 20 miles with a decent amount of single track. Last time I did a loop round Loch Affric going as far as the Youth Hostel at Altbeithe. Twas superb and will repeat if no better alternative.

                                Thanks in anticipation.

Your best bet is probably Youth Hostles - any search engine should give you a list. I know the one at Melrose is good and at Falkland. Most of the rest of the time, we've camped - fine through the summer. Enjoy the ride.

Hi. As mag says we have not done the big ride but I have ridden a lot up that coast. You can start south of Golspie and follow the coast sticking to coastal footpaths and sheep trails. Just past Golspie there is the Ben Bragie (spelling?) estate, head up there and then fly back down and carry on up the coast, through Bora and up to loth, again on sheep track and foot path. Only a few bit require you to get off. You can ride right up to Helmsdale but it gets tricky when the bracken is up. Alternatively you can take in a fantastic loop to Helmsdale up Glen Loth. Use the single track road up there but I reckon you could use the fishermens footpaths to descend into Helmsdale.

I've been riding locally for 10 years or so, usually in the forest trails around Craig Dunain, Dores, Ord hill, Great Glen Way. I usually pedal alone (Billy no mates !! )but would like to try other routes/areas etc. Do you have club outings to similar trails or do you mainly concentrate on short racing type routes like the ones at Learnie ? Your site is excellent. GT

Thanks for visiting. Yes, we're affiliated to SCU so we have Third Party - but only for "Club rides" as I understand it. We looked at lots of other insurance - but it was very expensive. We have suggested to club members that taking BCF personal insurance is probably their best bet. What are the courses like at Lochgilphead? Worth a visit sometime?

I'm afraid that we can only use the Contin course with permission from Forestry Commission Scotland (generally for race days)so no maps available, but there's plenty of sweet singletrack in the vicinity...call at the shop for details

                                Hi From Up North

                                Hello!
I am part of an mtb group in Caithness / North Sutherland. Two of our group have ridden some of your trails on the Black Isle and at Contin. They spoke very highly of them. We are currently working with FE at a place called Rumster in Caithness, hopefully we can build something as good as you have. To that end, I would like to think we would be made welcome on one of your evening or weekend rides and maybe share experiences of mtb riding and trail building in the North Highlands.

                                All the best

                                Dave

Of course you're more than welcome to join us, weekends or Thursday nights ( although these are a bit limited at the moment) If you're in the area, use the phone numbers on the contacts page to check if anyone is going out. And maybe we'll join you at Rumster sometime. Cheers, SteveB

Myself and another one other from the club are coming down to Alness on Saturday to do the Killer Loop featured in MBR magazine. Does anybody have any hints/tips of the best places to go? Will anybody be riding in the area on Saturday?

Des you can ride anywhere you want under the new legislation (see articles) but we put a tremendous amount of effort into trail building and club running and your membership helps with this and petitioning for more trails and open access. If you ride Learnie and Contin once each that would mean that each ride would have cost you £4.50 Join Himba for £9.00 and help make the Highland trails second to none. One final point, you do not have 3rd party insurance when you are not a member.

When you click on the movies, they should open up in a small pop-up window. They use the Flash plug-in which is pretty standard on current machines. Let me know if you are still having problems.
